It’s been another crazy month in world sport hasn’t it? With established institutions thrown upside down, exposed and finally having action taken against them (as with FIFA), tennis traditions coming to an end with Nadal losing in the quarters of the French Open and another major drugs allegation where you least expect it, this time with Alberto Salazar.
I’m not sure I recall a month like it, with sport dominating the front pages and lead news items as much as this. Just like the rest of real-life, it gives us a never-ending propensity to shock and surprise, and repeat itself. At the same time, whilst it can be tempting to be even more cynical about those in sport, particularly at the top, let’s not forget that as in all walks of life there are so many more who not only play by the letter of the law but the spirit too, and who unselfishly helps others before themselves. We’re fortunate in our business dealings and life outside to encounter these people all the time.
Just the other evening I was at the South Ribble Sports Awards, an event bringing local businesses and community organisations together and recognising their contributions to life in the area. One of the speakers was an HGV driver for the Waitrose distribution centre whose daughter had been brutally murdered by an abusive partner. Since then, and rather than feeling sorry for themselves and being cynical about the world, he and his wife have campaigned and worked ceaselessly to help other victims of crime. It was a very inspiring story borne from tragedy and perhaps more so than those talks delivered by high achievers, as his journey was not about personal gain but benefiting others. I’ve no doubt you will know many similar people and in greater numbers than those corrupt cheats who tend to dominate the headlines for all the wrong reasons.
And whilst out on your bike, or running on the fells, or working out in the gym, or playing tennis or whatever activity you do for personal challenge and pleasure, remember nothing can stop you deriving maximum satisfaction and meeting your goals.
